What Music Does Tom Waits Listen To?

Musician Tom Waits has an almost cult-like following. His fans love following the evolution of his music from the earliest recording (1973's Closing Time) to the most recent (2004's Real Gone). Recently I stumbled across this great article from The Observer from March 2005. In it Waits discusses the 20 albums that he values the most. It's an eclectic choice, as you would expect from him. The artists cited range from Captain Beefheart to the Rolling Stones to Frank Sinatra. The Pogues, Leonard Cohen, and Dylan are also cited. He also makes special mention of "Nessun Dorma".

You mentioned the rolling stones, which reminded me about this commercial I saw for a VH1 special on this band Platinum Weird where Mick is saying that they’re “the most famous band no one’s ever heard of.” i think they’re some band from the 70s that never released a record or something but I don't really know. anyone know something I don't?

I'd never heard of them, but this comment got me interested.

I did a Google search and came up with a web site for them. It's at http://www.platinum-weird.co.uk/

Interesting stuff!

I LOVE Tom Waits! This is a really cool article. Waits is hands down one of the best songwriters ever, but unfortunately not enough people know about him. Kudos to musical taste! Cheers.
